3D LIDAR site surveys by Thecaddesigner Ltd.

Our Scanning Services:

We offer two scanning services

1) Scan-to-Design

2) Scan-to-Cad

How it works:

To allow us to efficiently design your steelwork package or supply as-built plans we have introduced 3D LIDAR scanning to our services.  Now when we visit your site to take those important site measurements we are not limited to using just tape measures and Laser pointers.  We can 3D scan your site to produce accurate point clouds and 3D mesh information that when plugged into our Tekla 3D modelling software allows us to design around real-world data.  However, whilst our latest scanning equipment is taking these measurements it is also taking 4K photographic images.  This allows us to share with our clients an interactive 3D digital twin of the site that they can walk around using their computer or mobile device wherever they are in the world.  Whilst walking around this digital twin you can also take site measurements using the interactive web tools provided utilising the hidden 3D mesh behind the photographic images.

3D LIDAR Scanning FAQ's:

  • Reason to commission a 3D LIDAR Scan
The purpose of a 3D scan could be for various applications, capturing 3D measurement data for steelwork designing, for visual applications using the 3D walkaround, or both.  If we are designing & detailing your steelwork package the scan would be for as-built dimensional information of a building, factory machinery, anything that would effect the steelwork design.  For marketing a scan could be purely to use the 4K photographic digital twin to showcase your premises.  Maybe you could benefit from both the 3D data for us to design, and for your Project Managers to use the 4K digital twin to 'virtually' walk around a site to plan and document the installation and produce your RAMS.  The possibilities are almost endless.

  • What can be scanned
In theory anything can be scanned.  Practically, this technology is typically used for stationary objects to ensure dimensional accuracy, not anything that is moving.  However we can conduct the scan with moving objects, which will appear on the Digital Twin showcase (albeit blurred), all of the static items will not be effected.

  • Can you scan interior & exterior
Yes.  Lots of application benefit from capturing data inside and outside of a building because lighting conditions and temperatures do not effect the LIDAR technology.  However, water droplets and rain can effect the lenses as they can interfere with the accuracy of the beam bouncing straight back to the scanner.  If exterior scans are required we need to plan accordingly to avoid this.

  • Is Laser Scanning safe for the operator and other people near-by
Yes.  We only use the latest equipment which does not need any eye protection.  The process is totally non-intrusive.
